A lighter side @ Funny Times

Was just browsing and found the Funny Times.  The comic subscription to support the work of Patch Adams (remember the movie by Robin Williams?) and his Gesundheit Institute.  I just can’t resist sharing some of them which will hopefully lighten up your day as it did mine:

Shopped for storage media lately?

February 6th, 2009 by Wazir

Went shopping at Low Yat for new SD memory card today and was I in for a shock?  Sorry ah… have to sound like a jakun a bit here…

  1. Minimum size for SD card is now 2GB and it’s only RM18!  Cost me RM130 for 1GB not so long ago *$#%@!!!!
  2. They have 32GB thumb drive now????  And it’s only RM170????  My first thumb drive bought in 2005 cost RM125 for 256MB!!!!  More *%$#@#$%%*&
  3. And what is this Class 2, Class 4, Class 6 SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity)??? *scratch head*

Storage media has come a long, long way.  My first PC bought in 1991 came with 30MB hard drive!  Can you imagine that???

While we are on the subject of old technology here, the old PC also came with an Intel processor with 8MHz clock speed.  And there’s a “Turbo” button which will push it to 12MHz …. 50% improvement !!!  And if you still don’t get it, today’s PC runs at clock speed in excess of 3GHz … that’s 3,000MHz as compared to the 8MHz! Like comparing to someone on a bicycle and a supersonic jet.

Who’s watching our economy?

February 6th, 2009 by Wazir

It has been ages since one of us posted something up.  While things are getting quieter at home, sorry to say that things around seems to be getting worst (world economy that is).

It is really really sad to see our country’s leaders (all parties) seem to be paying so much attention to the tug of war to power that we are left to fend for ourselves.

With the economy going so badly, some so called leaders could still be so selfish as to jump parties or call for snap election.  Aren’t they aware that whenever there’s an election, the cost which runs to millions are paid from the hard earned tax payer’s money?

If I have my way, I would write the law to state something like:

  1. The elected leader will automatically loose their seat when they switch party (like it or not, most Malaysians vote the party instead of the person on the poster).  A snap election shall be called.
  2. Cost of the snap election shall be borne by the party who accepted the defector.  Alternatively, a fine of let say RM5 million if the defector holds a Parliamentary seat and RM2 million for State seat will be slapped on the new party.  The money could go towards the running of the snap election.
  3. If the elected leader for no apparent reasons (ie. not because of health or something that the public could digest) resigns from the party who they earlier represent, he or she will automatically loose the seat and get a hefty fine.
  4. The leader in question may contest for their lost seat in a snap election.  However, they will be barred for life if they loose the seat.  This is just to cover a genuine case where the people no longer belief in the party which won but would still support the candidate for his or her good services.

I apologize if I offended anyone by airing my views.  This is not our normal post here but it’s really frustrating to see that while millions are fighting to keep their rice bowl, our elected leaders are too busy with their own agendas.

Fancy some Vietnamese Food?

November 8th, 2008 by Us

Vietnamese food may not have as much followers as Japanese or Korean food here.  But for those who had a chance to sample good Vietnamese food, especially in Australia or Vietnam itself, you know what to look for.

Good news to Vietnamese food lovers! There’s a Vietnamese restaurant in Soho KL (Solaris Mont Kiara) that just opened recently.  The owner is a Vietnamese who just migrated over to Malaysia from Australia.  The food is cooked by his wife!  How authentic can you get now eh?

This place came highly recommended by our family doctor who claimed that he had the best beef dish there.  So, we decided to give this mystery “Beef” a try and gave it our seal of approval!

On our first trip there, we decided to try:

1.  O’Ngon Famous Beef with Crispy Potatoes (RM18-90++)
2.  Mango Green Salad (RM12-50++)

Ongon Beef with Crispy Potatoes

Mango Green Salad (with 4 Prawn Crackers)

The beef is tender and juicy. The restaurant claims that they use imported Australian beef (sourced from Cold Storage which is located round the corner from the restaurant).  Even the Mango Green salad which we ordered comes with strips of tender beef!  This mango salad is a must try for “kerabu” fans!

Enough on the food, where is this place?  The restaurant is called O’Ngon, on the first floor of the fairly new Solaris shopping complex.  For those who are new to Solaris or Soho KL, you may want to refer to Google Map for better idea on how to get there.  Once you get there, locate Cold Storage and go up to the first floor of the building.  O’Ngon is located towards the middle of the complex.

To sum it all, you should try this place if:

1. You’re into Vietnamese food and missed all those Vietnamese food you once had while studying in Australia.

2. You have hypertension and only allow yourself a beef meal once in a blue moon, use your ration here!

3. You want to try Vietnamese food for the first time.

4. The last time you tried Vietnamese food was in Bangsar Village and you either love or hate it there (btw, the Vietnamese food there was expensive and not that nice)

5. You just ran out of ideas of what to eat.

One didn’t make it ;o(

Last Sunday saw the death of the first fish …. it had showed symptoms for many days like not eating, staying away from the rest, etc, etc. Guess the idea of having to eat dead skin, separated from the love ones in its birth place in China and kept locked up in a small aquarium is too much for it to take.  Bye bye little fishy ;o(

After observing the 2 types of fishes for a few weeks now, what I can summarize …

First Batch
(aka cheaper Spa Fish)
Second Batch
(aka real Garra Rufa)
Lie idle on the aquarium floor or wall most of the time. Hyperactive fishes swimming constantly and like to rub into and annoy the first batch
Overall silver in colour with a strong line running from the tip of the mouth to the tail Darker grey in colour with a small dot at the tail
Faster to approach when you put your hands in the water. Probably because it didn’t get to eat when fed due to the more aggressive second batch A bit scarry cat. The smaller ones has tendency to come first while the bigger ones will swim around with occasional attack or nibble
Body is long and sleek. They are also more flexible when it comes to manouvering in between the toes Body resembles a small koi fish with a little bump behind the head and little “whiskers” on the mouth.  It is also a bit rounder as compared to the first batch.

Home Fish Spa at last ….

October 5th, 2008 by Us

Finally, after months of looking, today we found the cheapest supply of Garra Rufa or more commonly known as Doctor Fish or Spa Fish.  Not to be too adventurous, we bought our first 10 fishes at RM4-80 satu ekor from a fish shop at Taman United, Old Klang Road.  Brought them home and placed in an old aquarium first.  It will be at least two to three weeks before their new pond is ready.

Our little Garra Rufa in its new home

Previously, we had been quoted between RM12 to RM22 for a Garra Rufa.  The cheaper alternative is to use “Chin Chin” fish which is commonly used in many supermarket make shift fish spa as well as established fish spa like Kenko in Pavillion.  The difference is that the Chin Chin only cost RM0-50 and it bites! Unlike Garra Rufa, Chin Chin has teeth and the bigger and hungrier fish may even injure you.  In addition, Garra Rufa excretes substance which may heal some skin desease during its feeding frenzy while Chin Chin doesn’t.

If you have a chance, drop by a fish spa near Domino’s Pizza in Pearl Point, Old Klang Road. Just have a look at their Chin Chin fish.  Some are over 10cm long and I can only wonder how big their teeth are.
