Kidnapping - are your children safe?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Just heard a news over the weekend about a kidnapping attempt in Tesco Melaka.  A 10 year old boy was kidnapped right under his mother’s eyes while she paid for her groceries.

She started calling for him when she noticed he was missing.  The management got the workers to look for the boy which they found in the men’s toilet.  The kidnapper had shaved the boy’s head bald and one of his eyebrow when the workers found him.  The kidnapper ran out and jump through the window of an awaiting car when he was caught in the act.  The boy appeared to be charmed or hypnotised.

So, parents beware.  Even if your child is 10 years old, they are not safe from these unscrupulous people who are kidnapping the kids for whatever reason.  With the recent Sharlinie case, the posters may serve almost no purpose as the kidnappers could have shaven her head or something else to change her appearance.

CNY 2008 ended with a chiang and choy

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

this years cny is a little unusual, there were more people staying back in KL… cos usually kl roads would have lesser cars and you could actually dance on the road…

but this year, there was still minor traffic jams, and midvalley carpark is still full… although not as bad as usual…

wonder why they didnt go back to their hometown eh?

anyway, cny came and went away as fast as a blink of the eye… and that also  marked the end of my ang pau collecting spree :P

this year the lion dance for office was quite late, almost towards chap goh meh, and i didnt get to witness the lion grabbing the ang pau i left on my table as i was away in a meeting… but when i came back to my seat… lo and behold… i found a sang choy on my table… hehehe dunno who put it there… but i hope it would bring me lots of good luck!!

p.s. do check out my colleague’s super duper mega keng chao arrangement of the angpau for the lion :P the sang choy belongs to her too hehehehe….

just about after he walked away, someone came to my table and said flowers for Evelyn…

my immediate reaction was “huh?? did you get the right person ar? i’m Evelyn la… Eileen is sitting there, Irene is sitting next to me, and Aileen is in the building opposite…”

the guy said “erm lemme look at the card, it says evelyn **w”

“wah…. IT’S ME WOR… ” i must have said it really loud -_-’ cos after that everyone including boss and big boss was teasing me… and i became as red as those flowers…

Halal Bak Kua

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Malaysia probably has got the widest array of food in the region if not the world. And we cater for all races, religion and taste buds … localize it.

Now … come the halal Bak Kua (Dried Meat). Traditionally, it’s made with pork or chicken. Of course it is non halal and you have half the country’s population wondering how they taste like.

This store in Pavillion is the second company I see doing this. Previously there was another brand from Seremban selling halal Bak Kua in Jusco IOI Mall, Puchong. They unfortunately closed down ages ago.

So, any Muslims who has been wondering how this Bak Kua that they see being bbq’d by the road side taste like, go and try it out at the Lower Ground floor of Pavillion (near JCO Donut). And for the existing Bak Kua fans …. you’re probably better off with the original recipe :-)

Rising Cost of Living

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

The Star today published our concerns on escalating cost of living, crime rate and other issues. Kudos to them. However, you don’t need a poll to tell what is going on. The official figures shared by Central Bank often quote 1.9% or 2.0% as the inflation rate. On average perhaps, but not for the things we used most often.

Item

2004

2008

If only inflation is 2% per year we would pay

Actual average annual inflation rate

Petrol 1.35 1.92 1.46 10.5%
Yong Tau Foo 0.50 0.80 0.54 15.0%
Roti Canai 0.60 0.80 0.65 8.3%
Kesas Toll 1.50 2.20 1.62 11.7%
LDP Toll 1.00 1.60 1.08 15.0%

In addition to price increase, the things that are often overlooked when considering inflation of food are the quality and quantity. Inflation for cooked food is probably the highest in cities like KL. In 2004, I could get a plate of Char Kuay Teow with 3 medium prawns for RM2.00. Today, the price has been increased to RM3.50 and the 3 medium prawns cut down to 2 small prawns. The portion is also smaller.

Just look at our KFC chicken. Are they serving underaged chicken? Last I heard the chickens are only 27 days old!  Anyway, the chickens sold in market are usually only 35 days old but that is a good 30% older :-)

We can claim that goods in Malaysia are comparatively cheaper when compared to Singapore, Australia, US, etc but they are fast becoming less affordable. :-(

A spin on top Bukit Gasing

Friday, February 8th, 2008

After all the good and extremely unhealty food on the first day of CNY, we decided to burn some of the spare tire by walking around Bukit Gasing today.

For those who are not familiar with PJ area, Bukit Gasing is one of the few areas designated “green lung” of Klang Valley.

  1. From KL, take the Federal Highway and drive towards PJ. Turn left at the exit after Kota Darul Ehsan arch (ie. the KWSP Jalan Gasing / University Hospital exit). You will see the famous Ipoh Chicken Rice stall on your right after the turn (where you could go to refuel after the walk ;-) ).
  2. Drive straight until you see Lotus Restaurant on the right side of the road. Slow down and you will see a Chinese temple on your left. Turn left after the temple into Jalan 5/2.
  3. Drive for about 700 m and you spot the sign board on your right for “Hutan Pendidikan Bukit Gasing”. Park somewhere around this area. During weekends, there’s usually a lot of cars around.
  4. Start your walk by following the trail. Path is shaded with trees and it could get very dark close to 7pm. Allow yourself 2 hours for the walk and go as early as possible.

The trail we chose is about 4km long and it took us 1hr 40min to complete with a slow stroll and 3 short breaks. During the busy weekend, it may take you longer as the trail is crowded with people who may be slower than you are.
It can get a bit muddy after the rain, so, don’t take your brand new shoes there. Try not to wear slippers as the steep descent will be a bit tricky to tackle.  Some insect repellent will be useful too.  However, you won’t get attacked by the nyamuk unless you stop. And if you don’t feel like walking so far, you can always choose a shorter trail.

Try it out if you have never done so and be prepared to sweat it out … oh! bring yourself some drinking water and if nature calls … you just have to dig a hole and watch for the giant ants!
