Growing old comfortably

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I remember reading the story of Tomoji Tanabe who is the oldest man in the world last week.  Living to a hundred is no longer a rare case in Japan where by 2050, they expect some 1 million Japanese be 100 years old and more.  While we should all applaud to this fact, this phenomenon will burden the pension system in the country.

We are not so far back. Just look at our pension system for civil service which is one of the most lucrative in the world.  To be eligible for 50% of the last drawn salary, one has to work for 25 years.  In contrast, one has to work for 35 years to be eligible for 40% of the last drawn salary in the UK.

The life expectancy when our pension system was drawn up was probably around 60 to  65 years old.  However, our average life expectancy had risen to 72 years old for male and 76.7 years old for female. Today, some 15,000 to 17,000 civil service employees join the pension role each year.  With about 500,000 pensioners enjoying this benefit, this means that for every 4 pension scheme contributor, there will be one person drawing the pension.  This number is expected to grow to 1 pensioner to 1.6 contributors in the next 20 or so years.  Imagine this, the 1.6 contributors will have to fork out nearly 30% of their salary to make the pension work!  Of course this is not possible and hence the additional funds will be drawn via taxes from other sources when the time comes.

The government is aware of this situation and had privatised the pension fund to allow it to be managed better.  But with 500,000 people drawing from the funds each month, it is an uphill task.  In addition to just the pension drawdown, pensioners are also provided with full medical coverage.

I still believe that the pension is a great cushion to face old age.  But with longer life expectancy and increase in female workforce (who lives on average nearly 6 years longer than men), it will be sooner rather than later that the whole system may collapse. Growing old is scary for some …. growing old penniless on the other hand will be a living nightmare.

Yummy! Yummy! My cake has a tummy!

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Your cake has a bulge in the middle and it could even spot a nasty crack? Hmm.. cake with a stretch mark ;o)

The answer lies in the raising agent used. Baking powder will no longer be active when the temperature hits 90 degrees. As the outer circle of the cake gets hotter faster, it will stop raising first. The middle will continue to rise and cause it to bulge.

How to stop this? Few things you can do:

  1. Ensure that the oven is at the right temperature before placing the mixture in.
  2. Use a shallow pan where the heat will be evenly spread.
  3. Use combination of soda bicarbonate, yeast and baking powder as each of these ingredients will continue to work up to different temperatures.
  4. Place an aluminium foil over the mixture and cover the top of the foil with green beans. This will allow even heat distribution on the top of the cake.
  5. Place a small bowl of hot water in the oven as cracking could also be caused by dryness. The steam created by the hot water will keep the surface moist. This is especially true for cheese cakes.

its in this place holds a special place in my heart, this is where i gained knowledge, learned how to read and write, build my character, made friends whom are my best pal till today…

it hurts to see that it has now been torn down to become a shopping mall, but life goes on…

i will remember this place in my heart as what it used to be in my growing up years… and how Marriot used to be the big bungallow with a big tree that we used to play hide and seek… the big vacant land that became KL Plaza… the Church that became a big car park now…

all memories of yesteryear…

Alcohol Jokes

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Just thought of sharing some alcohol jokes which I picked up from Bali Pages.  Just a reminder for all those Happy Hours kakis :P

Alcohol Joke 1:

A man is sitting at a bar.  The bartender makes him an offer: he will give him a sip of many different drinks and if the barfly can identify what it is and where its from he will get to drink it.

The barfly takes a sip of the first one.

“Vodka from Russia” the man is right and the bartender hands him a full cup.

He then takes a sip of the second one.

“Tequila from Mexico”.

He goes on to name many more and eventually the bartender gets pissed off and fills a cup with piss.  The barfly takes a sip …

“That’s piss!” he screams.

“Yeah, but whose?” replies the bartender.

Alcohol Joke 2:

A guy walks into a bar looking real down in the dumps.  The bartender notices this and asks the guy what is wrong.

“My wife told me if I ever come home drunk again, she was going to divorce me.”

The bartender tells the guy he has nothing to worry about, it was probably just a threat. The guy agrees with the bartender and proceeds to get drunk. After more shots of rum and tequila than he can count, the man is sitting with his face down at the bar and pukes all over his shirt.

After realizing what he had done, the man starts to panic.

“What am I going to do?! My wife is going to kick me out of the house and take everything I’ve got!”

The bartender calms him down and tells him to stick a $20 bill in his shirt pocket and tell his wife it was some other drunk who puked all over him and he gave him the twenty to cover for the shirt.

After a couple cups of coffee the guy drives home to find his wife packing her bags.

He starts to explain what happened to his shirt and he pulls out two $20 bills to show his wife.

Wondering why the man gave her husband $40 instead of the $20 as explained, the wife asks “What’s the other $20 bill for?”

The husband replies “He shit in my pants too.”

Alcohol Joke 3:

A man walks into a bar, sits down and orders a Bud. He says “Give me a beer before problems start!”

The bartender doesn’t understand but gives the man the beer.  After 15 minutes the man orders a beer again saying “Give me a beer before problems start!”.

The bartender looks a little bit confused but pours the man a beer.  This goes on the whole night and after the 15th beer the bartender is totally confused and asks the man,

“What do you mean with before problems start, when are you going to pay for the beers you drunk?”

The man answers “You see right now the problems start!”

Fuel price subsidy … who is paying?

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Fuel price is a sensitive issue in Malaysia since the Gulf War in 1991 when the price of petrol went up from RM1.03 to RM1.13 within a few months.  The price has continued to rise eversince despite the fuel subsidy from the government.  But with the price of a barrel going up to USD80 (RM280), how long can the subsidy last?

Facts about fuel in Malaysia

  • We consume about 520,000 barrels or 82.68 million litres of fuel per day or 30.2 billion litres per year!
  • By 2010, Malaysia is expected to account for 1.94% of oil demand in Asia Pacific Region but will be providing 10.26% of the supply. ie. Malaysia will produce 5 times the amount of oil it consumes.  Every dollar increase in world price will result in 4 times profit!
  • The fuel subsidy has increased from RM6.6bil in 2005 to RM10.1bil in 2006 and this year it is estimated to cost 9.76bil.  Ironically, people with gas guzzler vehicles like 4WD or large CC cars get to enjoy the most of this subsidy when they are more likely to afford the full cost of fuel :P
  • Analysts predict that price of fuel should be in the region of USD60 to USD70 with an average of USD65.  The higher price of USD80 is driven politically rather than by market.

What is not mentioned in this equation is Malaysia’s high car sales tax.  Every year, about 450,000 to 500,000 passenger cars are registered.  The sales tax is anything from RM4,000 for a Kancil to over half a million for luxury cars.  The average is about RM20,000 per car sold.  This sums to about RM10bil per year. Hence, we are actually funding the fuel subsidy by buying cars.

In any case, I believe the government will bite the bullet and keep the petrol price as it is until after the election.  Otherwise, they will end up digging their own grave.  My personal view is that the subsidy which was introduced in the early 80’s had turned from helping the nation to a problem for the nation.  Just imagine what could be done with RM10bil per year but at least, this is the most transparent deal where the government is doing something for the rakyat.  In any case, we should prepare ourselves for much higher price of fuel with declining oil production and steep increase in demand.  Just my 2 cents view. :P

Plagarism what would you do?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Well after being drenched wet by rain, shivering in cold and painstakingly trying to steady my hands amidst the crowd, and a big effort to shut myself up from the urge to sing along to the song (so you wont get to hear my tone deaf singing in the video :P )

What did i get?

Some people just took it lock stock and barrel as if he/she was the one who took it… and then posted into his blog without a mention… like it was his own video….

What’s the feeling? Kanasai…

What do you think i should do yea? Flame him/her kao kao… or just leave him/her a comment to “Thank them for sharing my video?”
