ATM is 40 years old

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

40 years ago today, the world’s first automated cash dispenser manchine was unveiled in North London branch of Barclay’s Bank.  It only dispenses a bundle of 10 STG£1 notes at a time.  To make the withdrawal, customers had to obtain BarclayCash vouchers which were issued free to selected customers together with 4 digit code.

Now, the interesting part.  The vouchers were infused with Carbon 14, which is a radioactive substance! But it was said that you need to consume over 200,000 of these vouchers before it would affect the health.  But would you still carry such vouchers with you?  It would be interesting to place some of these vouchers in your luggage as you scan it through the X-ray machines.

Touch wood!

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

“Facts or Nonsense” is our new category containing totally useless information but nonetheless, interesting … to some at least.  BTW, no warranty on the accuracy of information … first “fact”, TOUCH WOOD.

Are you guilty of using this phrase just because everyone is using it?  Come on, admit it!  Then, do you know that it is believed that the phrase “touch wood” refers to the cross (crucifix).  Centuries ago, the cross were mainly made from wood or this phrase may even refer to the wooden cross which Jesus was crucified on.

So, the next time you say touch wood, you know what it means.

There you go, another useless piece of information to be stuffed in the brain ;o)

Delicious beard

Hundreds of sweet fine strands of “hair” wrapping crushed peanuts … have we got your attention yet? This is Dragon Beard Candy which is becoming extinct as we speak.  We came across this little push-cart stall called “Jonus Tasty Candy” just beside the atrium on the second floor of Sungei Wang plaza.

Jonus Tasty Candy

They make these little candy on the spot and a treat just to watch them do it.  The beard is made by stretching the sugar dough over many times just like how they make the chinese traditional noodle.  To avoid each strand from sticking to each other, the candy is covered with lots of glutinous rice flour (tepung pulut).  The candy maker aportions about 10cm of the candy and wrap about a spoon of crushed peanut in them… and that is what make dragon beard candy yummy.

Dragon Beard Candy in the making

This stall offers flavours like orange, strawberry and coffee in addition to the original flavoured beard.  These candies cost RM5 for a packs of 6’s (large) and RM4 for a pack of 4’s (small).  If you buy 2 large packs, you get 1 small for free.

This is a little pricy when compared to the dragon beard candy sold at Seri Petaling Pasar Malam (8 pieces for RM4) but you should take the expensive rental into consideration.  The Pasar Malam stall is located at the road side car park opposite the Golden Bread restaurant in Seri Petaling every Tuesday night.  Only original flavour is available there.

Looks a little like kitty hair ball …

Been thinking ’bout having your own domain?

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Like to have your own domain? A site to call your own?  A site by the name of http://www.superkengchow.com perhaps? (domain name still available at time of writing!)

Let us share our experience on getting our own domain after procrastinating for months.  The whole process was surprisingly simpler than we thought.

Step 1 - Register online with one of the webhosting site (we chose Eternal Solutions cos it’s the cheapest we can find)

Step 2 - Pay the money (not free unfortunately but it’s only RM130 per year)

Step 3 - Download Wordpress, customize it a bit and ftp to the new website

Voilaah! A new blog site we are proud to call our own.  The only headache now is to find and customize the site from thousands of themes available out there …Â

Anna & The King

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Featuring:

Anna Thai Restaurant as Anna
My Papa as The King
Father’s Day as The Occasion
Tiara Beach Resort, PD as The Location

We decided to travel down to Tiara Beach Resort in Port Dickson for dinner. There is this Thai restaurant which my parents had been raving about and we thought that we all give it a try. From the Seremban - PD highway, just drive straight until you come to a mini roundabout. Take a 9 o’clock and drive for another 8 km. You will see signboard to Tiara Beach Resort and Anna Thai restaurant will greet you on the left hand side. The front of this resort resembles a row of shop lots rather than a hotel.

Anna Thai Restaurant

First impression:

The layout of this restaurant is nothing fancy with some decor and drawings telling you that “we serve Thai food” kinda thing. The aircond is quite keng chow … so ladies in spaghetti straps might just end up with goose bumps.

The menu is not super long

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

i told my sister yesterday night, i had to walk out from the LRT station to my office… with my pants folded up like an old ah soh and hear squish squash squick with every step that i take…

she laughed…

nope i didnt wet my pants… and nope i didnt wear those kiddies shoes that squeks as you walk…

and laughed….

but i don’t find it funny…really not funny…

if you lived in hut without tv/radio/newspaper access and you have not heard that KL flooded after a heavy downpour on sunday night… tadaa… here you go… yes it flooded again… even after we have spent lots of tax payers $$ in building a SMART tunnel to channel water away so that kl wont flood…. sigh…

and apart from the many many victims… here’s another one to be added into the long list!!
my new shoes! hardly a week old!! damaged by those stinking mud and garbage…

was really contemplating the idea of tying both my feets into plastic bags and walk over the mud!!

*mutter mutter mutter*

kek sei ngo laaaaa!!

** grumbling and grumble grrr**

here’s some links to picture’s from the star online… to show how bad is the condition of the route i had to walk from the LRT station to work… see how dirty it was? no joke leh.. laugh at me la…

behind our building

p.s. dunno if its coincidence or what? this is the third flood in the same area on the same day but on different years! but of course if you want to compare the flood in 2002, its not as terror as the one in 2003 where we had to be rescued by the flood evacuation boat.. but then the 2007 is the mother of all floods i’ve witnessed!! lucky it wasnt a working day… thank god…
