Slippery, Slimy Day

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

We decided to burn up the extra “protein” we consumed in Coliseum Cafe last nite by taking a stroll up Bukit Gasing this morning. As it has been pouring in KL almost every day, the path was a bit more challenging due to the mud and slippery ground. In addition, we had a surprise encounter with a 7 feet Sumatran Spitting Cobra (naja sumatrana), one of the biggest we have seen todate. While we were fiddling with the camera phone, the snake made an escape and we only managed to snap the tail portion (see below).

To make things more interesting, Eve’s shoes gave way to a BIG SMILE :-)

We borrowed from nature a crawler and used it to tie the sole and made it back to the car. The best shoes for this trail is a cheap one. We have seen a few Adidas, Nike, etc sole being left behind on the trail … at least now we know how they felt :-(

Poor shoes … could not take the beating any more

A spin on top Bukit Gasing

Friday, February 8th, 2008

After all the good and extremely unhealty food on the first day of CNY, we decided to burn some of the spare tire by walking around Bukit Gasing today.

For those who are not familiar with PJ area, Bukit Gasing is one of the few areas designated “green lung” of Klang Valley.

  1. From KL, take the Federal Highway and drive towards PJ. Turn left at the exit after Kota Darul Ehsan arch (ie. the KWSP Jalan Gasing / University Hospital exit). You will see the famous Ipoh Chicken Rice stall on your right after the turn (where you could go to refuel after the walk ;-) ).
  2. Drive straight until you see Lotus Restaurant on the right side of the road. Slow down and you will see a Chinese temple on your left. Turn left after the temple into Jalan 5/2.
  3. Drive for about 700 m and you spot the sign board on your right for “Hutan Pendidikan Bukit Gasing”. Park somewhere around this area. During weekends, there’s usually a lot of cars around.
  4. Start your walk by following the trail. Path is shaded with trees and it could get very dark close to 7pm. Allow yourself 2 hours for the walk and go as early as possible.

The trail we chose is about 4km long and it took us 1hr 40min to complete with a slow stroll and 3 short breaks. During the busy weekend, it may take you longer as the trail is crowded with people who may be slower than you are.
It can get a bit muddy after the rain, so, don’t take your brand new shoes there. Try not to wear slippers as the steep descent will be a bit tricky to tackle.  Some insect repellent will be useful too.  However, you won’t get attacked by the nyamuk unless you stop. And if you don’t feel like walking so far, you can always choose a shorter trail.

Try it out if you have never done so and be prepared to sweat it out … oh! bring yourself some drinking water and if nature calls … you just have to dig a hole and watch for the giant ants!

To recycle or not to recycle

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Ikano Power Centre is nice enough to prepare these 3 bins in every corner of the store. Blue for plastic, Green for paper and Black for other trash.  But are the shoppers ready and willing to spend a couple seconds more to consider which bin to use?  Well, for some, it’s just too much to ask … sigh!

Sharksfin … delicacy or death wish?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Attended a workshop in Swiss Garden Hotel for the last 2 days. The seminar room was just across from Ah Yat Abalone Forum restaurant and I could not help noticing the dried sharks fins which they have on display as well as the fresh South African abalone on the menu.

Ah Yat Abalone Forum with Sharks Fin

Sadly enough, sharks fin soup is still considered a delicacy or even a must by many at weddings and special celebrations. But the fin itself only provides nothing more than texture and toxin to our bodies. Even if we do not care about the 100 million sharks that are killed for their fins each year, we should think about our health. Sharks fins are found to contain up to 42 times the safe level of heavy metal such as mercury. As our oceans are being polluted, the sharks which breed in these waters absorb the heavy metal which are then passed on to humans when we consume them.

Sharks fins are nothing more than cartilage, has no nutritional value and taste. Eating it may potentially cause sterility, central nervous system problems and kidney diseases. Question now, why are we still paying RM30 for a bowl of toxin?

Photo hunt - Dirty

Sunday, September 2nd, 2007

Was reading YuinYin’s blog, and came to know about PhotoHunt, decided to join in the bandwagon, and here is my first photo submission for this weeks theme Dirty.

This was the mess that was left behind by the family who was sitting next to us on the little hill, last Thursday when we were at Putrajaya to watch Team Japan. I doubt anyone would go up the hill and clean up the mess! So its just gonna be there forever until some lallang grows on it and covers everything up.
I’m not really an environmentalist, but i think cleanliness should be taught to kids when they are young, i feel the same way about manners too. Those kids are an absolute nuisance, they took small stones and left on our picnic mat, and when i stared (ok ok i admit… i glared at him!) at him he just ran!

Through out the whole night they were just picking up stones from everywhere and throwing them downhill, trying to aim at those that were below us or a bigger rock, and the parents did nothing.. Amazing right?

Just hope and pray that, when the day comes and i have my own kids, i wont be one of “those” parents…

Living dangerously in Cameron

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

After the the incident with the tiger, we found more proof of dangerous wildlife of Cameron.

**Eve shoved W away and took over the keyboard now**

I was walking about… Stretching and enjoying the nice cool air… Then i spotted something on the grass… Squinted my eyes to have a good look at what it was, because i had absentmindedly left my glasses at office and I’m now blind as a bat!

When my brain finally registered what the blurry image was… I stayed rooted to the ground holding my breath at the “two eyes staring back at me”!!

Something thats not meant to be there was staring back at me!!!There was this dreaded bunny teeth snake lurking on the grass… *i gave out a loud piercing scream*

Bunny teeth snake

*mutter mutter*

hak sei ngo la…. never mind, walk the other direction, then while i was outside the tennis court area admiring the beautiful purple flowers, i don’t know what its named (maybe you can help me here if you know :P ) its so pretty almost “curi” it back hehehe..

Quickly looked left and right, NO ONE, and the gardener not around, my lips curled into a smile….

*evil grin* muahahaha!!! My chance is here!!! *rubs hands*

Stretched out my hand…. THEN i spotted this fella also peeking back at me!!

Giant wasp in the flower

Grrrr… That’s the work of *someone* who took the souvenirs we bought and put them in the garden for me to discover :P

How? Want to scold also cannot stop laughing, want to whack the fella also cant run fast enough ! Cis!

TIGER in Cameron Highlands

Monday, August 13th, 2007

First day in Cameron Highlands and we came across a tiger in the garden! It was first sighted by Evelyn who ran for her life … but then she came back with the camera and pass it to me and ran again … aiyoh!

So, here we have a picture of the tiger.  Thousand apology for the pic quality … panic mah!

Tiger in Cameron Highlands

This is no ordinary tiger, it has thousands of eyes, a pair of wings, 6 legs and can hang on to a leaf. Well, you don’t expect to find real tigers in the garden do you? We stumbled across a moth measuring about 15cm or 6 inches in diameter with tiger stripes like pattern.  This one is considered lucky as moths and butterflies are harvested in Cameron Highlands and sold as souvenirs to tourists in glass frames or plastic key chains.  Poor thing not only has to fight the climate change, deforestation but also its unnatural predators, human.  As the ads say, “When the buying stops, the killing will to“. Until tourists stop buying the dead butterflies and moths, they will continue to be hunted.

Cameron Tiger Moth

Now back to our lil discovery, the moth actually reminds me of something, with the big eyes and fierce look ….

BioDaVersity Code

Picture taken from the BioDaVersity Code @ Freerange Studios

Someone sent me this link to this video sometime ago and i would like to share this here, as after watching this video it really woke me up to a certain extent on how our climate has changed due to our own doings…

this has prompted me to do some little things from my side like:-
1. help by spreading this information, so that more people are aware of this (the links/pictures have been copied from the WWF Website, you may click on them to go to the web page to read for more info.)
2. take the train to work instead of driving to work, consume less petrol and emit lesser co2 into the air.
3. save water by turning off the tap while brushing teeth, and while soaping myself during bath, also to wash my clothes with a full load instead of half load.
4. making my own compose bin
5. bring my own shopping bag when i go shopping, to reduce usage of plastic bags
6. recycle my news paper, plastic bottles (shampoo bottle, water bottles etc), and glass bottles
7. save electricity by turning off my pc when not in use, and sleep with the lights off (this is a big effort, cos i’m afraid of dark!!)

shall add on more to the list, this is just a start for doing my part to save the “home” that we live in….
